Reflecting on this funny plant…

Greater water-moss found me through a series of coincidences, which begin in the Those Who Went Missing group.

I picked up my esk, 2105, from the in-game greenhouse on a whim. Certain “make-your-own” characters are generated there, which have a few pre-determined traits to prompt you in designing the character. 2105 was written as haunting a “dammed river,” which really called to me, and nobody else seemed to be going after them... But they also carried a plant I had not encountered before, greater water-moss (Fontinalis antipyretica.) I remember furiously websearching whether it was found anywhere in Arizona in the thirty minute window before claims opened, hahahaha.

There is not much information online about greater water-moss in Arizona. SEINet maps exactly one instance of collection, but the U of A Herbarium has some extra observations of their own. They seem to like mountain streams and pools, but there are an odd bunch collected at lower elevations, too. There is so little information about the kinds of habitats that they occur in in the desert, I’m still in the realm of speculation when I write about 2105’s haunt.

Still, this plant’s really grown on me for what I have read about it. I think my favorite thing about greater water-moss is its ability to bioadsorb cadmium and zinc… Without knowing, I had placed 2105 in an area with a long history of mining that haunts its watershed today, in the form of heavy metal contamination. Runoff from old, unremediated mines is a particularly big challenge on the upper Agua Fria watershed, one of the areas that inspired me to pursue environmental science in the first place. The adjacent Verde river, where 2105 is located, faces similar challenges.

Fun fact? Cadmium is one of the most commonly sampled heavy metals in the Agua Fria watershed. (Meanwhile arsenic is the principle metal of interest on the Verde.) So I speculate on what could be : -B mossy cadmium bioremediation? Biosampling? I’m not sure. It’s all speculative. But it’s fun to think about.

Serão pinturas fáceis para uma prática rápida. Se você não tiver as cores que eu utilizei, não tem problema! Use as que você possui! Se não conseguir desenhar exatamente o que eu fiz, também não se estresse! Trabalhe com o desenho que sair! Nesse primeiro projeto, quero chamar atenção de algumas coisas: ☑️ A técnica úmido sobre úmido indica que você irá aplicar a tinta sobre a superfície molhada do papel. Pode ser molhada com água limpa ou com alguma cor aplicada anteriormente e que ainda não secou. No caso da nossa flor, é para usar água limpa sobre o papel antes de aplicar as tintas, trabalhando uma pétala de cada vez. ☑️ Existem várias formas de reservar o branco do papel. Nesse projeto eu simplesmente pintei ao redor dos pontos que serão o miolo da flor. Como eles são amarelos, se eu tivesse pintado toda a pétala com o violeta/rosa, ao aplicar o amarelo ele não apareceria, já que a aquarela é uma tinta transparente. ☑️ A técnica úmido sobre seco indica que você aplicará a tinta sobre o papel seco. No nosso caso, as pétalas já deverão estar sequinhas. ☑️ Fiz o verde desse projeto misturando cadmium yellow e phthalo blue. Criar misturas de verde é importante pois é possível conseguir nuances mais próximas dos verdes naturais. Tenho usado muito o phthalo blue pois ele, dos azuis, é o que menos granula. Os azuis cobalto, ultramine e índigo granulam demais e nem sempre queremos esse efeito. Espero que esses estudos rápidos sejam úteis! Los óleos en la pintura

Los Óleos La mayoría de la gente, cuando empieza a pintar, parece que tiene un impulso por comprar tantos colores como pueda pagar. Naranjas brillantes, púrpuras, verdes, lo que sea. La verdad es que no necesitas muchos colores cuando estás comenzando. De hecho, es completamente lo contrario. Cuando eres un principiante necesitas aprender a mezclar tus colores. Hacer mezclas de colores es una habilidad esencial, no solo para que puedas ser eficiente con tu pintura, sino que también para entender las relaciones entre los colores.

Vasari Recuerda que los viejos maestros usaban materiales de calidad inferior a lo que tenemos disponible hoy. No tenían materiales especiales ni técnicas secretas. Tampoco tu necesitarás comprar todas las herramientas nuevas que estén disponibles. Manténlo simple, es mejor poco pero bueno que mucho pero mediocre. Es mejor tener un puñado de buenos pinceles que muchos pinceles malos. En cuanto a qué marca de pintura comprar, te sugiero que compres pinturas de calidad de artista profesional en lugar de calidad de estudiante, ya que hay una diferencia notable. Las marcas que usamos en el Atelier son las siguientes: Vasari, Old Holland, Williamsburg, Michael Harding o Winsor & Newton. Williamsburg Empezar con una paleta limitada siempre es una buena opción. Puedes crear tu propia paleta con los siguientes colores: Titanium White Yellow Ocre Deep Cadmium Red Medium Ultramarine Blue Deep Después de unas cuantas sesiones de práctica con la paleta limitada, las suficientes como para entender los diferentes colores y las mezclas posibles, entonces quizás quieras añadir a tu paleta algún color mas: Cadmium Yellow Medium Cadmium Orange Cerulean Blue Cobalt Blue Raw Umber En realidad no tenemos negro en la paleta, ya que es mejor mezclar los colores para obtener el negro deseado.
